In January 1998, Tom and Eileen Lonergan surfaced from a dive on Australia's Great Barrier Reef and found their boat had left without them.Incredibly, no one realized the couple was missing for two full days, until staff found their bag, wallet, and passports still sitting on the boat.When the alarm was finally raised, planes, helicopters, and boats searched the ocean. They found nothing.Pieces of their diving equipment later washed ashore. Their bodies were never recovered.Months later, a fisherman found a small slate, the kind divers use to write underwater. On it, the couple had written that their boat had abandoned them.The message was dated January 26, a sign they had survived their first night at sea. Their plea ended: "Please help us… rescue us before we die. Help!!!"Their story later inspired the movie "Open Water."
